RAIN-AFFECTED: Women take refuge at a flood relief camp set up at the Chinthavalappu school in Kozikode on Sunday.

KOZHIKODE: District Collector P.B. Salim has declared a holiday on Monday for all educational institutions, except professional colleges, in the wake of the extensive damage caused by rain.

The body of a 23-year-old youth, Sabu, hailing from Uruvattoor, who was reported missing since Saturday, was found on Sunday morning.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has convened a meeting at 10 a.m. on Monday to review the damage caused by rain. The meeting will be held at the Kozhikode Civil Station. District Collectors and officials of the Revenue, Agriculture, Police, Irrigation, Tribal Welfare, Civil Supplies and Health departments of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad will attend the meeting.

Ten persons have been reported injured in monsoon-related accidents. One house was destroyed and 985 houses were damaged. The damage to houses has been estimated at Rs. 1.3 crore. Ten wells have been damaged in the rainfall.

With the intensity of the rain weakening, flood waters have receded in most places in the Corporation limits. However, some low-lying areas continue to be water-logged. Standing crops on 555.99 hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed since the onset of the monsoon on May 23.

Seventy-two relief camps have been opened in the district. Seventeen camps were opened in Kozhikode taluk, eight in Koyilandy and six in Vadakara taluk in the last 24 hours. As many as 5,025 people are housed in these camps.

Officials inspected the facilities at the relief camps. Food, medicines and medical check-ups were provided at the camps.
