Rs.22-crore loss in Palakkad

Five dead, nine houses destroyed, 412 dwellings damaged

PALAKKAD: In the rain havoc in the district so far, five persons had been killed, nine houses destroyed and 412 houses damaged. The body of Thankamani, 25, son of Ponnappan of Kizhakkepalayam, Vadakkumcherry, who was missing since July 16 in the Mangalam river was recovered by rescue workers on Sunday.

The loss caused by the rain is estimated at Rs.22 crore, an official report presented at a review meeting on flood-relief measures here on Sunday said.

Electricity Minister A.K. Balan presided. The meeting said the loss from the destruction of, and damage to, houses was Rs.20 lakh.

Crops on 2,173.51 hectares of land were damaged, of which paddy fields made up the largest area of 1,392 hectares. The crop loss is estimated at Rs.9.72 crore.

Damage of roads led to a loss of Rs.5.3 crore. The major loss was in the Nelliampathy and Attappady hills, the report said.

The Irrigation Department sustained a loss of Rs.3.48 crore.

V. Chenthamarakshan, MLA, District Collector A.T. James, Superintendent of Police Vijay Sakhare and others participated in the meeting.

2,592 houses damaged

Correspondent writes from Kalpetta:

Revenue officials said three persons were killed and 2,952 houses damaged in the heavy rain in Wayanad district since Wednesday. They said 9,768 people were displaced from their homes. The loss was estimated at Rs. 24.13 crore till Sunday. The intensity of the rain had weakened since Friday afternoon.

As many as 34,672 people have been classified as rain-affected since the onset of the monsoon. Seven people were killed in the district in rain-related calamities during this period. Officials said 157 houses were destroyed and 2,765 houses sustained partial damage, including destruction of 48 houses and partial damage to 398 houses on Sunday. The damage to houses is estimated at Rs. 6.39 crore.

Officials said 129 relief camps had been opened in the district. Of this, 21 camps were opened on Sunday in three taluks in the district. The total damage to crops was estimated at Rs.13.77 crore spread over 1,372.95 hectares, officials said. A holiday has been declared for educational institutions, except professional colleges, in the district on Monday.

Holiday in Kozhikode

District Collector P.B. Salim has declared a holiday on Monday for all educational institutions, except professional colleges, in the wake of the extensive damage caused by rain.

The body of a 23-year-old youth, Sabu, hailing from Uruvattoor, who was reported missing since Saturday, was found on Sunday morning.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has convened a meeting at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Civil Station to review the damage caused by rain. District Collectors and officials of the Revenue, Agriculture, Police, Irrigation, Tribal Welfare, Civil Supplies and Health departments of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad will attend the meeting.

Ten persons have been reported injured in monsoon-related accidents in the district. One house was destroyed and 985 houses were damaged. The damage to houses has been estimated at Rs. 1.3 crore. Ten wells have been damaged in the rainfall.

Standing crops on 555.99 hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed since the onset of the monsoon on May 23. Seventy-two relief camps have been opened in the district. Seventeen camps were opened in Kozhikode taluk, eight in Koyilandy and six in Vadakara taluk in the last 24 hours. As many as 5,025 people are housed in these camps.
