MPs urged to fight for State’s demands

BANGALORE: The Kannada Geleyara Balaga has urged the Lok Sabha members elected from Karnataka to fight for various demands, including getting classical language status for Kannada and change of names of certain places in the State.

In an open letter to the MPs, Balaga convener R.N. Chandrashekhar said 18 stalwarts from different fields had presented their views on the works to be done for the State from the Union Government at a seminar on June 24.

Despite deciding to offer classical language status to Kannada, the Union Government has remained silent for over eight months on the issue. Similarly, though the State Government had recommended change of names of various cities and towns to their original names in 2006, the Union Government has not accorded approval.

The other demands include special status to Hyderabad Karnataka; getting the “right share” in the Mahadayi waters; permission to complete Shivanasamudram and Mekedatu hydel power projects; inclusion of Mangalore, Gulbarga and Konkan Railway in South Western Railway; starting of a day train between Bangalore and Mangalore; and improvement and expansion of national highways.
