GUNTUR: The first lot of Tata Nano cars rolled out in Guntur on Monday as curious onlookers watched the “people’s car” with interest. An agriculturalist near Bapatla, N. Subrahmanyam, was the winner of the first Nano car, a middle version CX-BS-II model, as the keys were handed over at a simple function on the premises of Jasper Industries Private Limited in Autonagar.

Jasper Industries vice-president P.V. Satyanarayana Rao handed over a gift box along with keys to a beaming Subrahmanyam. He was among the 94 select people picked in a lottery to be handed over the cars shortly. Over 1,000 people had booked the Nano here through the State Bank of India in April. The SBI, Arundelpet Branch Manager Krishna Mohan was present.

For Mr. Subrahmanyam it was his second car, after an Ambassador. “On-road price has come to Rs.1.74 lakh,” he said. The second owner in the district was a housewife B. Padmavathi from Guntur, spouse of an official in electricity department. She opted for the standard BS-II version.

Regular despatches of cars had begun from Pant Nagar plant in Gujarat and the first one lakh deliveries were expected to be completed by the last quarter of 2010. Efforts were also on to augment the production at the upcoming plant in Sanand. Jasper Industries, Guntur, Manager R. Suresh was also present.
