Quick-reaction wing for disaster management

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: The government will form a quick-reaction wing for disaster management by including adventurously proactive people from all places prone to disaster.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said on Monday that the people who led the rescue work during the recent floods across the district, particularly those at Pothukallu panchayat, would be included in the special team.

The Minister visited the flood-ravaged areas of Nilambur taluk in the district on Monday afternoon. He walked across the temporary foot bridge built by the local people across the Chaliyar. He sanctioned Rs.10 lakh as an immediate relief for reconstruction of the Ambuttampetti bridge, which was washed away in the flash floods a few days ago. Mr. Rajendran also visited the house of Sujita, a two-year-old Adivasi child who drowned in a pond near the Ambuttampetty tribal colony. The Minister sanctioned a relief of Rs.1 lakh to the child’s parents, Selvan and Sunitha.

Praising the work of the personnel of the Central Rapid Action Force during the flood devastation, the Minister said that the State would demand for an RAF centre in Kerala.
