ERODE: State Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan’s decision to hike wages is likely to benefit 1,600-plus primary milk cooperative society employees. A few days ago, the Minister informed the Tamil Nadu Assembly that the Department proposed to hike wages by Rs. 250-Rs. 850 for employees of profit-making societies and Rs. 100 for employees of other societies. In Erode district, 1,600 employees in 724 societies will stand to benefit as and when the government passes a Government Order implementing the decision. Of these, around 120 employees in 77 loss-making societies will get only around Rs. 100. Sources in the Department say the 77 societies incur loss only on account of the volume of milk they buy and nothing else. For a society to break-even, they say that it has to buy at least 200 litres of milk a day. But then in dry areas and during windy season when milk production comes down, the societies get anywhere between 80-150 litres a day. The societies buy cow’s milk between Rs. 9 and Rs. 12.50 a litre depending on fat and solid non-fat content; and buffalo’s milk between Rs. 15 and Rs. 18.50 a litre, again depending on fat and SNF content.
