Five MCD by-elections soon

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

Returning Officers for the by-polls announced

Expected to be held by August-end

Being seen as a referendum for the BJP

NEW DELHI: The State Election Commission of Delhi would conduct by-elections to five wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi soon. The Commission on Monday announced the appointment of the returning officers for these by-elections.

Neera Kharbanda will be the returning officer for Samaipur Badli. This seat had fallen vacant after Congress Councillor Devender Yadav contested and won the Delhi Assembly election.

Hastsaal seat

Similarly the Hastsaal seat had fallen vacant after Independent Councillor Nand Kishore contested the Delhi Assembly election on Congress ticket and won. Pramod Kumar will be the returning officer for this by-election.

The Commission announced that Rajeev Shukla would be the returning officer for the Dichaon Kalan seat which had fallen vacant after Independent Councillor Bharat Singh won the Assembly election from Najafgarh as an Independent.

For the Mayur Vihar Phase II seat, the Commission has appointed Raj Ram as the returning officer. This seat was held by Delhi Youth Congress president Anil Kumar who later contested and won the Assembly election from Patparganj.

Anand Vihar

Usha Upadhyaya will be the returning officer for the Anand Vihar by-election. This seat was earlier represented by former Deputy Mayor S. S. Bajwa who died in a tragic accident while being chased by some monkeys.

The by-elections are expected to be held by August-end. The by-elections assume significance as the BJP had swept the MCD polls in 2007 but subsequently faced a rout in both the Delhi Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from Delhi. Therefore these polls are seen by political observers as a referendum of sorts on the performance of the BJP in the civic body.
