CBI arrests Protector of Emigrants, two agents on corruption charges

S. Vijay Kumar

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested the Protector of Emigrants, Chennai, and two agents on charges of corruption. Immediate searches on the premises of the official and the agents led to the seizure of Rs.1 crore.

According to sources in the agency, the Superintendent of Police (Anti-Corruption Branch) S. Murugan received information that Protector of Emigrants R. Sekar and Service Agent for Emigration Anwar Hussain had approached D. Ravindra Babu, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Students and Parents Welfare Trust, for an admission to an engineering college.

It came to light that the admission was for Sekar’s son S. Madhu. A surprise check in the office of Ravindra Babu at West Mambalam led to the seizure of the cash.

The money was allegedly acquired by the official from various applicants for emigration clearance and kept in the custody of Anwar Hussain.

A case was registered against Sekar, Anwar Hussain and Ravindra Babu under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the IPC.

Searches conducted at the residence and office premises of the official and Anwar Hussain led to the seizure of more than Rs.1 crore. Some documents were also seized.

The SP told The Hindu that Sekar was a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). With jurisdiction over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka and Kerala, the basic function of the Protector of Emigrants was to give emigration clearance to skilled, semi-skilled and labour class emigrants.

“We had specific information on corrupt practices, following which the searches were conducted. More searches are being conducted on the premises of the accused. They will be produced in a special court on Tuesday,” he added.
