Lawyers’ Union presses for a Supreme Court Bench in south

Special Correspondent

Writes to Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily

Parliamentary Standing Committee has passed a resolution

Another group calls for Tamil as High Court language

CHENNAI: Members of the All-India Lawyers’ Union have written to the Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily, stressing the urgency for setting up a Bench of the Supreme Court in the south.

“When the demand for Benches of High Courts within a State is being conceded it is all the more necessary to have at least one Bench of the Supreme Court in the south. In fact, Article 130 of the Constitution of India contemplates a Bench of the Supreme Court in places other than Delhi…” the letter, a copy of which was released to the media, states.

The release points out that a Parliamentary Standing Committee has passed a resolution recommending for setting up a Supreme Court Bench in the south. The demand is being made on the grounds that more people are approaching the Supreme Court for redress now than ever before, and it is difficult for most persons to make the journey to Delhi.

In a separate letter, the Tamil Nadu High Court Advocates’ Tamil Manram wrote to the Union Minister urging him to take steps to grant the request of the Tamil Nadu government to make Tamil the court language in the High Court in Madras.

They said the litigants should be able to plead their case in the language they are familiar with.

Another group of lawyers owing allegiance to the Congress has written to Mr. Moily reiterating the plea for a seat of Supreme Court in any one of the southern State capitals, indicating that Chennai would be a good choice.

They have also asked for an institution like the Bangalore National Law School to be set up in Chennai.
