Plan to build auditorium and hospital UGC panel had visited university last October TIRUCHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs. 13.4 crore grant to Bharathidasan University for utilisation during the Eleventh Five Year Plan period. The sanctioned sum comprises Rs. 828.75 lakh as general development grant, Rs. 508.5 lakh for merged schemes and Rs. 5 lakh for Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Under the general development grant, Rs. 1 crore is meant to create facilities for differently-abled persons. It is with this funding that the university intends to establish its Centre for Development of Tamil Software for the Differently Abled. A professor, reader and lecturer would be appointed, Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said. Development of other departments will also be undertaken under the general development grant. Under the merged schemes, the university has plans to create facilities like auditorium and hospital. The university is expected to furnish a detailed break-up on how the sanctioned amount will be spent. The sanction was made on the recommendation of a six-member expert committee headed by K. Sidappa, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University. The committee visited the university in October last year to assess its requirements for the Eleventh Plan period and utilisation of the grants under the Tenth Plan. The grant amount was about Rs. 3 crore under the Tenth Plan. During the three-day visit, the committee assessed the requirements of each of the over 30 departments, and visited the common facilities including the Centre for Distance Education, Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development, Bharathidasan University Technology Park, Women’s Training Centre, Biomedical Diagnostic Laboratory, Informatics Centre, library, hostels and the administrative building.
