Kamat to present budget on Friday

Special Correspondent

‘Government committed to achieving 9 per cent growth in Goa’

PANAJI: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat announced here on Tuesday that he would present an additional budget for 2009-10 on Friday that would include a package of administrative reforms, tax reforms and beneficial schemes.

The Chief Minister was speaking on the second day of the budget session. Mr. Kamat, who holds the Finance portfolio, had presented an interim budget for the present year in March and taken a vote-on-account for five months ahead of the Lok Sabha election. Replying to the Opposition’s criticism that the Government was not tabling a full-fledged budget in the ongoing budget session as it had nothing to give to the people, Mr. Kamat said that Goa was also affected by worldwide recession, despite which the Government was committed to achieving 9 per cent growth that was both equitable and inclusive.

Criticised

Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar criticised the Government for “failing to tighten its belt in the area of extraneous expenditure,” and warned that the revenue deficit would go out of control if the Government failed to be bound by fiscal responsibility and budget management norms.
