Congress stakes claim to two seats

CHENNAI: The Congress has staked claim for Thondamuthur and Srivaikuntam Assembly constituencies, by-elections to which are to be held on August 18.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu made the request when he met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence here on Tuesday. The party had contested both the constituencies in the last election.

Talking to reporters after meeting Mr. Karunanidhi along with Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudarssanam, Mr. Thangkabalu said the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s decision to boycott the by-elections to five constituencies showed its fear of defeat. — Special Correspondent
