GHMC polls before August 31, says SEC

HYDERABAD: The State Election Commissioner, A.V.S. Reddy, affirmed here on Tuesday that GHMC polls would be conducted before August 31st as per High Court’s direction and the model code of conduct would come into force as soon as the notification was issued.

However, Mr. Reddy did not reveal date of election notification or the poll day. He only reiterated he would avoid dates clashing with festival days before deciding a date “unless the HC decides otherwise.” Addressing a press conference after meeting representatives of recognised political parties, the SEC said he would need 28 days from the day of election notification to conduct elections before next month end. And as per the prevailing laws, the SEC had no role to either decide on divisions’ delimitation or reservation as these were Government’s prerogatives. In any case, the matter was “sub-judice” as it was under consideration of HC. Mr. Reddy dismissed fears about EVMs being manipulated pointing out that the Election Commission of India (EC) had refuted such claims about the machines made by Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL).
