Hundreds of people witness solar eclipse in Kollam

SUN GAZING: People watching the solar eclipse wearing special goggles in Kollam on Wednesday morning.

KOLLAM: Wednesday witnessed large groups of people engaged in sun gazing in Kollam. By 5.30 a.m. people began to gather at open spaces in the city to watch the sun get obscured by the moon. The Asramam Maidan saw the largest gathering for the purpose.

The phenomenon, labelled by astronomers as the longest solar eclipse of the century, evoked awe among all.

Prayers too

While many simply enjoyed the sun getting obscured for a short period, some prayed. Some refused to come out believing the occasion to be inauspicious and even a health hazard. The latter group was careful not to consume any food, since that too would “cause harm.”
