SALEM: A large number of students and people in Salem witnessed the solar eclipse on Wednesday.

Students gathered on Salem Steel Plant premises, Pulikuthi Street in Gugai, Don Bosco Anbu Illam, CSI Polytechnic College and Tiruvagoundanur Bypass to watch the rare cosmic event. The Tamil Nadu Science Forum and the CSI Polytechnic College had made arrangements for the people to watch the celestial event through telescope and special glasses.

The organisers distributed special glasses made by the forum to view the eclipse. Barring a few places where cloud overcast disappointed people, the partial eclipse was visible at majority of the places in the district.

The forum had also taken the opportunity to dispel superstitions associated with eclipses and present the youths with the facts related to the event. The solar eclipse was a natural phenomenon and there was nothing supernatural attached to the event, organisers told the students.
