MYSORE: The railway authorities have withdrawn the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) facility for passengers travelling less than 200 km consequent to a circular issued by the Railway Board. Under the UTS facility, a passenger could purchase ticket three days in advance for a journey between any two stations and avoid the last minute hassle of standing in a lengthy queue. This was particularly useful for frequent short-distance commuters and though there was little awareness of the UTS when introduced, it slowly became popular. Short-distance travellers on the Mysore-Bangalore stretch found it useful as they could purchase a ticket with three days validity and travel by any train of their convenience and avoid the lengthy queue. The decision to impose restrictions on UTS and issue it only for journey extending beyond 200 km was taken by the higher authorities as there were complaints of misuse of tickets. Anup Dayanand, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Mysore Division, said that the UTS facility would, however, be available for those travelling beyond 200 km. While it is not clear if the restriction is a permanent measure, Dr. Dayanand said that a decision to reintroduce it would depend on the measures to be taken to prevent misuse of tickets. Since the ticket had a three-day validity printed on it, many passengers used to complete the journey while seeking a refund after it on the grounds that they had not travelled instead of surrendering it at the exit gate.
