AUT expresses shock over Ponmudy’s statement

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has expressed shock over the statement of Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudy at the recent meeting held at the University of Madras with principals and a section of teachers of government colleges that the issue of gradual conversion of government and aided colleges into universities had been referred to a high-level committee comprising TANSCHE officials and former Vice-Chancellors.

Further, the AUT has said that it was unable to comprehend the government’s action in not inviting teachers or principals of aided colleges for the meeting, but making an important announcement having an impact on aided institutions.

When the conversion of two aided colleges (PSG group of colleges, Coimbatore, and Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai) has evoked opposition from the stake holders, the AUT is anguished over the reported move to gradually convert several colleges into universities, a statement issued by the association here said.
