This Day That Age
A dynamo set fitted to a bicycle gave no light but yielded a good dividend to the customs authorities at the Bombay Port on July 20 when they recovered some wrist watches from it. A visitor was hurrying out of the customs barrier at the Ballard Pier Mole station in Bombay on a bicycle in heavy rain after a U.K.-bound ship had left. A customs officer at the gate called the cyclist and offered him shelter in his enclosure till the rain abated. He then asked if the cyclist had anything to declare, to which the latter said no. The official then switched on the dynamo and when it failed to give light he opened it to find some wrist watches in it. After a thorough search of the cyclist and his bicycle the official recovered 46 wrist watches valued at about Rs.3,000.
