Students demand basic amenities

Staff Reporter

And own buildings to house classrooms

Though land was allotted for constructing buildings, no work has taken place

Of the required 28 teaching staff, there are just about six, say students

KULITHALAI: Students of the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Assembly Golden Jubilee Commemoration Government Arts College, Kulithalai, have demanded basic amenities and own buildings to house the classrooms. There are more than 700 students undergoing various courses in the college but they are cramped in small classrooms in rented a building.

Paucity of adequate space has forced the college authorities to go in for staggered shift system for conducting classes. While the second and third year students attend classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the freshers are asked to attend classes only for two days in a week on Thursdays and Fridays.

Worse still, on the first three days of the week, the final year degree students attend classes in the morning while the sophomores undergo lessons in the afternoon.

As for the faculty, out of the required 28 teaching staff, there are just six or so staff allege the students, complicating matters further for them.

After the State government identified and allotted lands for raising buildings for the college near Ayyarmalai a few months back, funds were allotted and even ground breaking ceremony was conducted. But the project is still to take off for reasons best known to the officials.

Even at the present temporary location of the college, sanitary facilities and other amenities are less than desired, students feel. It is under these circumstances that the students have demanded better amenities in the present location and have called upon the authorities to expedite the construction of the new college premises at Ayyarmalai area so that they could move over to the new location as early as possible.

More than that they want the authorities to take immediate steps to avert loss of precious time for studying and conducting classes. “We need to attend classes on five days of the week so that the syllabus could be covered in full,” they observed. To fulfil their educational needs the students also want the State Government and the Department of Higher Education to appoint teachers as required.

If the present trend continues then students might lose interest in studies while the college could lose potential students and the name itself. .
