Encouragement: Chief Postmaster-General (Tamil Nadu Circle) S.K. Chakrabarti distributes prizes to winners of a letter writing competition in Chennai on Wednesday. CHENNAI: In an attempt to encourage and inculcate letter-writing habit among youngsters, the office of the Chief Postmaster-General (Tamil Nadu Circle) recently conducted a letter-writing competition for students of schools across the State. Writers of the best letters, selected by a panel of judges, were honoured with prizes at a function here on Wednesday. Speaking at the event, Chief Postmaster-General (Tamil Nadu Circle) S.K. Chakrabarti said the habit of writing personal letters had waned but business letters were gaining prominence owing to increasing communication between the customers and marketers. Students, he observed, must inculcate the habit of writing letters, which would help them hone their communication skills. “Letter-writing activity can do much more than fetching marks at the exams. It helps the students to learn the right way of communicating their thoughts,” he said. The Department of Posts had adapted itself to technological changes that were taking place over the years and conducts such competitions in every State to train young minds. Postmaster-General (Mail and Management) K. Ramachandirann urged the students to write a variety of letters to gain confidence in their writing skills. Letters add a personal touch that other modes of communication lack. Over 45,000 students took part in the competition and 18 were selected winners in three categories, he said. In the English letter-writing competition, S. Vignesh of Chinmaya Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore; R. Albert Paul of Maxwell Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur; and S. Vigneshvarma of Doveton Corrie Boys Higher Secondary School, Vepery, won the first prizes in sub-junior, junior category and senior categories respectively. In the Tamil competition, T.L. Reshme of St. Mary’s Primary School, Chengalpattu; T. Gayathri of St. Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore; and R.Vijayalakshmi of Devanathan Higher Secondary School, Chromepet, were adjudged the first-prize winners.
