Ministers hold talks with milk producers
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Two rounds of talks were held on Wednesday between representatives of milk producers and the State government.
The talks were held in the backdrop of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s assurance in the Assembly a few weeks ago, when the milk producers went on an agitation, demanding a hike in procurement price.
Hike in prices
K.A. Sengottuvel, president of the Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Welfare Association, said the negotiations were held with a group of Ministers comprising Arcot N. Veeraswami, K. Ponmudy and U. Madhivanan. The government agreed to hike the price for cow milk by Rs.2 per litre and for buffalo milk by Rs.5 per litre.
Model code of conduct
However, a senior official said that as the model code of conduct was in force in the wake of by-elections to five Assembly constituencies, the government would take up the issue for a final decision only after the polls.
