Tunga water for Srisailam

G.V. Ramana Rao

VIJAYAWADA: A large amount of water is being released for the Srisailam dam, where water has reached rock bottom, for the first time this rainy season from the Tungabhadra Dam that is almost full, according Irrigation Department sources here.

While nearly 80,000 cusecs is being discharged from the Tungabhadra Dam that is 96 per cent full, only half of this amount is being released from Alamatti Dam that is also 80 per cent full as on Wednesday. The two reservoirs in Karnataka have been receiving water from their respective drainage basins (catchment areas) for the past 10 days.

As much as 174 tmcft of water was available for irrigation in these two major reservoirs on the Krishna and its tributary Tungabhadra, against the zero tmcft available in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs downstream on Wednesday.

Though it will take some time for the water released from the Tungabhadra reservoir to reach Srisailam, the State irrigation authorities have issued orders to release over 20,000 cusecs from the dam that is just 18 per cent full and has technically no water available for irrigation.

The Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir, which is 48 per cent full and has technically no water available for irrigation, is also discharging 13,068 cusecs needed for the irrigation of Krishna delta.

The Vijayawada Irrigation Circle authorities are releasing from Prakasam Barrage 8,772 cusecs into the Krishna Eastern Main canal for the irrigation of kharif crop in Krishna and West Godavari districts and 4,545 cusecs into the Krishna Western Main Canal for raising kharif in Guntur and Prakasam districts.
