State award for best junior Red Cross volunteer announced

INFORMATIVE: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, releasing a book at the anniversary celebrations of the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch, at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Wednesday. The first copy was received by S. Ilango, Director of Public Health.

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Wednesday announced an annual State award for the best junior Red Cross volunteer in the State.

Launching various rehabilitation projects to mark the 89th anniversary of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Tamil Nadu and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Solferino, Mr. Barnala noted that there were about 4.80 lakh students enrolled as Junior Red Cross cadres in the State. Besides, there were an estimated 8.13 lakh Youth Red Cross volunteers from 800 colleges in the State. Together, they were part of a global movement involving about 115 million Red Cross volunteers across 187 countries, he said. The Governor, who is also Patron-in-Chief of the IRCS State unit, urged schools, colleges and other educational institutions to chalk out plans to include more students in the Red Cross movement. Parents too need to inculcate the spirit of social service in children.

Lauding the activities of the State unit of IRCS, Mr. Barnala noted that apart from relief and rehabilitation work in times of natural disasters such as the tsunami, volunteers had actively engaged in various programme ranging from health and blood donation to providing mobility aids for physically challenged sections and organising family reunions. The Governor laid the foundation stones for a Net Mending and Multi Purpose Building complex at Eripurakarai and S.R. Pattinam in Thanjavur district to be built on an estimate of Rs. 40 lakh courtesy the Spanish Red Cross. Mr. Barnala complimented the Italian Red Cross for renovating and modernising the artificial limb centres and physiotherapy unit of the IRCS and the efforts to construct a Disaster management Centre at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh.
