CoD to probe garbage clearance scam

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday assured the Legislative Council that an inquiry by the Corps of Detectives (CoD) would be ordered into the irregularities to the tune of Rs. 251 crore in garbage clearance in Bangalore city.

The Chief Minister made the promise when Congress members resumed their dharna in the well of the House demanding action against those involved in the as soon as the Council met in the morning.

They withdrew the protest after the Chief Minister’s assurance.

Though Mr. Yeddyurappa on Wednesday said that a judicial probe would be ordered, the Opposition observed that it would not be effective in this case as the commission would not have powers to prosecute the guilty.

There were heated arguments between the ruling and Opposition members when the Chief Minister said irregularities had been happening in garbage clearance since the last eight years. The Opposition alleged that the Chief Minister was trying to shield the guilty.

The Opposition demanded that the 30 contractors involved in the scam should be blacklisted and their contracts terminated.

They also sought action against officials who colluded with the contractors.
