Karunanidhi’s house to become free hospital

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday announced that his house in Gopalapuram would be used to run a free hospital for the poor after him and his wife.

Speaking during the inauguration of the health insurance scheme for the poor by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, he said: “As this is a function connected with medical facilities for the people, it is but proper to announce that I am happy that I have decided to dedicate this only house of mine, after me and my wife, for running a free hospital for the poor, either by entrusting it to the Government of Tamil Nadu or to the Kalaignar Charitable Trust.”

He added that his wife and children had consented to it. He suggested that it be built in the memory of his parents, Anjugam and Muthuvel.

Mr. Karunanidhi went on to state that property acquired in his name before and after he assumed office included the street-house in Gopalauram (valued at Rs. 8 crore), where he was currently living, and 14 acres of land at Kattur, near Tiruvarur. He said he had turned down suggestions to move to a big government bungalow during his previous terms as Chief Minister.
