Gopal, Udeshi finish strongly

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster G.N. Gopal tied for the fourth spot in the Balaguer International Open chess tournament after winning the 10th round against Germany’s Roeder Matthias in Balaguer, Spain, on Wednesday.

Gopal, with seven points, had to settle for the fifth spot after the tie was broken. Venezuela’s Eduardo Iturrizaga pipped Bulgaria’s Kiril Georgiev on tiebreak score to claim the title after the two aggregated eight points.

National sub-junior champion Aditya Udeshi (6.5 points) signed off his stupendous run with a victory over teammate Deepthamsh Reddy and finished a highly creditable joint sixth before taking the eighth spot in this formidable field.

Devangi Patankar scored over Finland’s GM Heikki Westerinen as most Indians finished strongly.

Parimarjan posts win

Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi (5.5 points) came up with a brilliant tactical display to beat Sweden’s Stellan Brynell with black pieces and shared the second spot with five others after six rounds of the Politiken Cup chess tournament at Copenhagen.

Sasikiran held

Top seed K. Sasikiran (2.5 points) drew with Polish GM Bartlomiej Macieja in just 23 moves in the fifth round of the Najdorf memorial chess tournament at Warsaw.
