Glasgow home of chicken tikka masala: Labour MP

London: The delectable Asian curry ‘chicken tikka masala,’ a favourite dish in the United Kingdom, entered the House of Commons after a lawmaker made a strong bid to get the Scottish town of Glasgow officially recognised as the home of the dish.

Mohammad Sarwar of Pakistani origin and Labour MP from Glasgow Central, tabled an early day motion in the House seeking the European Union (EU) protected ‘Designation of Origin Status’ for the curry.

Mr. Sarwar claimed that the dish was invented in the 1970s by Ali Ahmed Aslam, proprietor of the Shish Mahal restaurant in Glasgow’s west end.

The town has already won the ‘curry capital of Britain’ award thrice.

It is also believed that the mild curry was created decades ago at a Glaswegian kitchen by Asian immigrants catering to Western palates.
