World of music bereaved

Just within a week, two doyens -- Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal and Gangubai Hangal -- breathed their last, leaving behind a huge void in the world of Indian classical music. Both women were exemplary in their own right. The revolutionary Pattammal was the first Brahmin woman to have performed Carnatic music, both on stage and air, besides delivering ‘Ragam Thanam Pallavi’, the most difficult item in Carnatic music. Hindustani classical vocalist and exponent of Kirana Gharana genre of music, Gangubhai Hangal mesmerised her fans with powerful, deep tone. Both the women braved all odds, breaking many a pre-conceived notion of their time before making their mark in the field of music.

Their absence will certainly be felt.
