CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday urged Tamilians to choose Tamil names for their children.

Speaking at the launch of a scheme to distribute gold rings to babies born in Chennai Corporation hospitals and who had been given Tamil names, he said that people of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka were passionate about their mother tongue. But it was not so in Tamil Nadu.

A total of Rs.3.67 lakh had been spent on providing 250 rings at the cost of Rs.1,468 each, Mr. Stalin said. A committee consisting of Tamil teachers had been appointed to scrutinise the names of babies before distribution of the rings. In future, the rings would be distributed at zonal-level every month.

Mr. Stalin said that he too would have been given a Tamil name as his parents had chosen to christen him “Ayyadurai.” However, the death of Communist leader Stalin changed that.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said that disposable surgical gowns were being given to surgeons at Corporation hospitals. Blood testing and ECG were being done free of cost at the hospitals. Tenders had been called to purchase more ECG equipment.

Mayor M. Subramanian said that in the first phase, the rings would be given to babies that were born from June 3 to July 18 and given Tamil names. Thamizharasi, Thamizharasu, Thamizhchelvan, Ilakiya, Thenmozhi, Aravindan and Manimekalai were some of the names parents had chosen for their babies.
