THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The SAARC Teachers Federation (STF) will hold a conference on ‘Quality education in the wake of global economic crisis’ in the city on August 27 and 28. The Federation comprising about three million teachers from SAARC countries, excluding Bhutan and the Maldives (not members of the federation), was constituted in 2003 and is recognised by the SAARC summit. Addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday, S. Eswaran, general secretary of the Federation, said one of the primary responsibilities of the organisation was to ensure quality education and strengthen teachers’ organisations. Headquartered in New Delhi, the organisation has presence in all the States across the country. The STF is also affiliated to the Educational International (EI), a world-wide organisation of teachers with membership of nearly 30 million. Some of the stated objectives of the STF included addressing issues relating to child labour, enrolment, AIDS and curriculum development. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor will inaugurate the conference. Minister for Education M.A. Baby will deliver a special address on the occasion. The conference will be preceded by a two-day workshop on the theme of ‘Economic crisis’ for participants within the country.
