BANGALORE: The city police who went looking for a fugitive in Kerala triggered much drama when neighbours intervened to say they had the man. The police team turned up at the house of 43-year-old Basheer of Koduvalli near Kozhikode (Calicut) for his alleged involvement in a case of dacoity in which a cloth merchant, Ashok Kumar of Poonam Plaza in Chickpet police station limits, was robbed by six masked men of Rs. 6 lakh in cash and four cellphones on July 18. “We studied a mobile phone and suspected the involvement of Basheer. We confirmed his address and identity and went to arrest him on July 21,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) B. Shivakumar said. “There, he created a scene and gathered the public. He then got himself admitted to a hospital,” he said. The city police have registered a complaint with Koduvalli police accusing Basheer of preventing lawful discharge of duty. Mr. Shivakumar said the police have informed their counterparts about Basheer’s alleged involvement in the dacoity. However, according to the Koduvalli residents, there are many Basheers in the town and the wrong one’s house was pointed out by passers-by to the police team, who incidentally were in civilian clothes. The door was opened by Basheer’s aged mother. When Basheer tried to explain to the policemen that he was “not involved in any crime”, the policemen allegedly threatened him with a pistol, beat him up and asked him to accompany them. The brouhaha attracted the neighbours who initially did not believe that the strangers were policemen and prevented them from taking Basheer away. High drama ensued and Koduvalli police sub-inspector K.A. Bose and Koduvalli Panchayat president U. Mohammed came to the spot.
