TIRUCHI: The Central University, Tiruvarur, is working towards launching a few academic programmes during September. It is one among the 12 new Central Universities in the country started in hitherto uncovered states through an Act of Parliament; Central Universities Act, 2009, earlier this year. ‘Non-lab, non-equipment’ based programmes in social sciences and humanities will be launched. The programmes in English Language Studies, Tamil Language Studies, and Regional Studies hadbeen almost finalised in consultation with eminent experts, Vice-Chancellor B.P. Sanjay told The Hindu. A brain storming session at national level was scheduled in the last week of August at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, to discuss a comprehensive programme in Physics, with related inputs in Chemical and Mathematical Sciences, he informed, adding that with a focus on comprehensive integrated programmes, the university would accord utmost importance to Choice-Based-Credit-System. Adjunct and guest faculties with abilities to work in different areas have been identified. Once teaching and research departments are crystallised, substantive positions will be notified and recruitment process initiated as per the UGC guidelines for teaching positions. The temporary campus to function from the new building with 55,000 square feet floor space provided by the State Government in the Collectorate Complex will be adapted for teaching and lab space, and setting up administrative, finance and other wings. The task would be initiated in a week’s time, Prof. Sanjay said, adding that the notification on student admissions will be issued shortly. The system would be in place at the time of the launch of programmes, he assured and was hopeful of the university getting the right student inputs. The university was simultaneously working with the State Government and district authorities for planning the development of permanent campus, the Vice-Chancellor said.
