Review: Transport Minister K. N. Nehru inspecting works being executed at the Puthur Weir in Tiruchi on Saturday. TIRUCHI: The aqueduct and other improvement works being carried out at the Puthur weir, as part of the Rs.253 crore flood control project, would be completed as per schedule, Transport Minister K. N. Nehru said here on Saturday. An underground tunnel is also being built across the Uyyakondan river to let out the flood discharge from Kollankulam channel and residential areas Edamalaipattipudur, Karumandapam and New Selva Nagar areas directly into Kudamuritti river. The works at the weir has been taken up at a cost of Rs.7.80 crore. The aqueduct would carry the flow in the Uyyakondan channel and help smooth flow of the flood discharge from the Koraiyar into the Kudamuritti river. The confluence of the Koraiyur and Uyyakondan, from where the Kudamuritti river originates, often witnesses a huge surge of floods during the monsoon. The aqueduct would help overcome the problem. The structure would run for a distance of 360 metres and would be built over 36 piers. The duct would be built of box culverts above which inspection vehicles could run. Mr. Nehru inspected the progress and instructed officials to widen the Kollakulam channel and remove all encroachments to ensure free flow of flood discharge. He requested Collector T. Soundiah to convene a joint coordination meeting with government agencies concerned to expedite the project. Chief Engineer, PWD, Tiruchi region, M. Moorthy, accompanied the Minister. The Minister said the underground tunnel would be completed before August 31. There would be no problem in releasing water for irrigation in Uyyakondan river during the ensuing agriculture season, he said.
