Visakhapatnam
Fun time: Students cheer their teachers as they dance in gay abandon at the Horlicks Wiz Kids city finals held at Port Kalavani auditorium in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: Melonika Mahapatro (Std. VII) of De Paul School and Sayantan (Std. IX) of Etasi Timpany School have won the city finals of the Horlicks Wiz Kids 2009 held at Port Kalavani auditorium here on Saturday. They will represent Visakhapatnam in the national finals to be held in Bangalore in November this year. In all, 4,500 students from 45 schools in and around the city participated in the city finals. Competitions were conducted in 20 different sections like dance, music, quiz, mehendi and story-writing that were designed to bring out the latent talent among the children. There was excitement in the jam-packed auditorium as the performers were cheered by their respective schoolmates with flags, banners and waving of the hands. The participants came up with certain interesting answers in the final round. When asked what he would do if his dad gave him Rs.10,000 on his birthday, a boy replied: “I will spend Rs.2,700 on a dress which I like very much and donate the remaining amount to an old-age home.” Another boy was asked: “What would you do if you wake up one morning and find yourself as a girl?” He replied: “It makes no difference. Gender doesn’t make any difference any more. I will continue to work as hard as I do now.” One girl admitted that she was selfish and said that she would spend the Rs.55 lakhs she wins in a lottery first on herself, then her family and finally on society. The judges were educationist G. Anantram, medical practitioners Padmini Chengal Roy and Usha Rani, president of Vizag Women’s Hockey Association Jeeja Valsaraj and editor of ‘Yo Vizag’ magazine Shilpa Dantu. The highlight of the evening was when teachers literally danced to the tunes of their students. When the anchor asked the students what competitions should be held for their teachers, they replied in chorus, ‘fashion show’. The teachers, both men and women, shed their inhibitions for a while and tried to impress their students. After they ‘walked the ramp’ in style, the next competition as desired by their students was ‘dance’. Once again the teachers were on their feet and danced in gay abandon to racy numbers from Hindi films besides performing folk and modern dances.
