Landscaping begins at civil station

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Visitors to the civil station at Kudappanakkunnu can see a group of women hard at work; clearing debris, chopping away weeds and planting saplings.

In three weeks, these women hope to beautify the civil station premises, plant flowering trees along the station’s driveway and create a lush garden in front of the Collectorate. The group — 32 women and two men — have been employed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme by the Kudappanakkunnu grama panchayat.

“Apart from the beautification and tree-planting work the workers will install rainwater harvesting facilities, a pond, a drainage canal and a pedestrian walkway leading up to the Collectorate,” panchayat president B. Sudhakaran Nair told The Hindu on Saturday.

Each worker is being given Rs.125 a day, he added.

Varieties

In all, 300 saplings will be planted in the civil station premises. These include Indian Laburnum (kani konna), flame of the forest, neem, and gooseberry trees. The District Planning Committee had recently sanctioned Rs.9.70 lakh for this scheme.
