Coimbatore Corporation upset over unauthorised road digging

Special Correspondent

Warns of stringent action if water lines are damaged

Civic body will not take lightly the damage caused to its services, says Mayor

Public can inform zonal offices if they come across unauthorised digging

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation is upset that despite its appeal, some telecom service providers are digging roads without its permission to lay cables. It has warned of stringent action, including lodging criminal cases, if roads are dug without sanction.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Thursday that its officials had detected such cases on Wednesday at A.K.S. Nagar in Ponnaiahrajapuram and at Palanisamy Colony in Shanmugha Nagar. The contractors involved in the work had been asked to prove that they had got sanction from the Corporation. The civic body would go in for criminal action if the digging was found to have been unauthorised.

The Mayor said that apart from not closing the pits, the workers damaged water lines. While the digging itself was unauthorised on the one hand, public utilities were damaged on the other, he said.

“Agencies digging the roads should bear in mind that the Corporation is closely watching these works across the city. The civic body will not take lightly the damage caused to its services,” the Mayor said.

“We also want the contractors and the service providers to ensure that the dug up earth should not be strewn on the road to obstruct flow of traffic,” the Mayor said.

Mr. Venkatachalam said the public could inform the four zone offices of the Corporation if they came across unauthorised digging.

The names of the Assistant Commissioners (with phone numbers in brackets) are: East Zone: Sukumar (94437-99212), West Zone: Loganathan (94437-99207), North Zone: Soundararajan (94437-99203) and South Zone: Lakshmanan (94437-99211).
