Hassan CMC discusses renaming of circles

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: Members of the Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC) met on Saturday to discuss the renaming of various circles here. They also observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal who died recently.

They discussed the proposal to rename the Tanneerhalla Circle on Hassan-Mangalore Road after Balagangadharanatha Swamiji. This was objected to by Bharatiya Janata Party member Annapoornamma. She said the area was known for the Tanneerhalla Math and hence the current name should remain.

H.M. Suresh of the Janata Dal (Secular) said that from 1986 there had been demands to name circles, but no rules governing procedure had been spelt out. He suggested that a meeting of senior citizens and various elected representatives be called to arrive at a consensus. He wanted the proposals to be sent to the Government before names were assigned.

K.T. Prakash Dasappa said that under the Karnataka Municipal Reforms Project, the Government had released Rs. 38 crore of which more than Rs. 20 crore had been used for unapproved projects. These projects were taken up in wards represented by Janata Dal (S) leaders, while no importance had been given to wards represented by the BJP and the Congress. Since this was a World Bank scheme, rules should be followed, he added. Mr. Dasappa said the district administration had received Rs. 5.6 crore from the Karnataka State Financial Corporation under Mukta Nidhi grants and wanted the CMC to undertake work on certain projects in consultation with councillors.
