Over 100 Ashtoor residents contract gastroenteritis

Staff Correspondent

Water contamination suspected to be reason for outbreak

Water samples from the village have been sent for tests

A leak in the water pipeline led to

contamination, say sources

BIDAR: More than 100 residents of Ashtoor village in Bidar taluk have contracted gastroenteritis in the past couple of days. However, no patient has tested positive for cholera so far.

Residents have been going to the District Hospital in Bidar to undergo treatment for vomiting and dysentery since Thursday.

Abdul Hameed from Ashtoor village told The Hindu that he was admitted to the hospital on Friday with vomiting and dysentery. When asked whether he had attended a marriage or a place where a large number of people had congregated, Mr. Hameed said he had not. Shivakumar said that he admitted his father, Shankarappa, to hospital on Saturday after he started vomiting and developed dysentery.

Doctors said that on an average about 50 patients complaining of vomiting and dysentery were being admitted to the hospital every day. District Surveillance Officer Anil Chintamani said that water contamination could be the reason for the gastroenteritis outbreak. Water samples from the village had been sent for tests, he said.

According to sources, a leak in the water pipeline led to the contamination. They said that zilla panchayat officials were repairing the pipeline.

It may be recalled here that a couple of months ago, a large number of people with gastroenteritis were admitted to the District Hospital. Two persons tested positive for cholera. Gastroenteritis cases were reported from Maskal, Shemballi, Manhalli and T. Mirzapur villages.
