One building built on government land brought down Protesters allege selective targeting by officials Karwar: Tension prevailed in Hurulisal village near Bhatkal on Saturday after a group of people tried to prevent Revenue Department officials from demolishing structures that were built illegally on government land. A few days ago some people had complained to Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, district in-charge Minister, that a building had come up on government land at Huralisal. Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner had asked the authorities concerned to clear the encroachments. On Saturday, a building owned by Yahya, a doctor, was demolished in the presence of Navin Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, and K. Mathai, tahsildar of Bhatkal. When the officials moved to the next building, owned by one Sameer, a large number of people belonging to a particular community arrived at the spot and tried to prevent them from demolishing the structure. However, only a portion of the structure was brought down. There was tension in the area as the mob tried to attack the officials. Police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control. The protesters alleged that the officials were demolishing buildings that were built after obtaining permission from the gram panchayat authorities. They alleged that the officials were targeting only those belonging to a particular community as other buildings had also been built in the village on encroached land. Mr. Kumar and Mr. Mathai pacified the protesters and said that such structures would be demolished if a complaint was filed. The protesters threatened that they would call a bandh in Bhatkal if the other unauthorised structures were not demolished. Later, town panchayat president Parvez Kashimji and member Inyatulla Shabandri arrived at the spot and pacified the mob. Police personnel have been posted outside the six buildings, which, the protesters alleged, had been built on government land.
