NHRC report on Batla House encounter flayed

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission’s report on the Batla House encounter in Delhi in which two alleged militants and a police officer were killed in September last year has come in for criticism from human rights groups on the ground that it was based on police reports of the incident.

The NHRC filed the report on the orders of the Delhi High Court after activist groups pointed to several specific problems in the Delhi Police version of the “encounter” and filed a petition in the High Court. The report was released here this past week. Civil rights groups such as the People’s Union for Democratic Rights, Anhad and Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Group have alleged that the NHRC did not bother to conduct an independent examination of witnesses. They have demanded that a Special Investigation Team be appointed by the High Court to probe the encounter.
