Pune: The 15th FIVB men’s under-21 volleyball World championship will be held in Pune under the aegis of Volleyball Federation of India and Maharashtra State Volleyball Association at Balewadi from July 31. Champion Brazil will take on fourth-ranked Russia and India faces off against Tunisia on the opening day. K. Murugan, Secretary-General of VFI said at Friday’s official launch: “The Indian team have trained hard and are looking to make a mark. The championship is a stepping stone in the efforts to elevate the game to international standards. “VFI has recognised the growth of volleyball in India and are taking necessary efforts to make the sport a more visible and exciting spectacle.” Sixteen teamsThe teams taking part are Tunisia, USA, Belarus, Iran, Belgium, China, Egypt, Greece, France, Cuba, Argentina, Russia, Brazil, Poland, Canada and host India. The Pune event will comprise four rounds and 64 matches in all. — Special Correspondent
