Government clarifies on arrears

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The government has clarified that the entire arrears consequent on pay revision and the difference in retirement benefits such as leave salary and gratuity will be paid in lump sum to spouses or legal heirs of those employees who died on or after January 1, 2006.

Likewise, in the case of pensioners or family pensioners who died on or after January 1, 2006, their spouses or legal heirs will be given arrears of pension or family pension, if any, in one go. Interim arrears paid to them will be adjusted.

In case employees/pensioners/family pensioners who died after receiving the first instalment of arrears, the balance amount will be paid in lump sum to legal heirs.

The government issued an order on Friday, clarifying the position in response to doubts expressed in certain quarters as to whether legal heirs of employees or pensioners or family pensioners will get arrears due to revision of pay or pension due to employees or pensioners or family pensioners who died between January 1, 2006 and May 31, 2009.
