‘Do not backtrack from train extension decision’

Special Correspondent

KANNUR: The Malabar Rail Users’ Association (MRUA) has urged the Railway Ministry not to revoke the decision to extend the Yashwantpur-Mangalore Express train to Kannur as announced in the Railway Budget.

Association general secretary T.P. Somanathan said here on Sunday that the extension of the train to Kannur was a boon both for people travelling to Bangalore from Kannur and Kasaragod districts and short-distance passengers in the route.

Put on hold

The Railway Budget announcement was now put on hold following opposition from a local MP in Karnataka and some youth organisations there. He said that the opposition to the decision to extend the train would be seen as an attempt to help a ‘bus lobby.’ All political parties, youth organisations in Kannur and Kasaragod and the local MPs here should intervene to ensure that the decision was not withdrawn.

The Railway authorities should also take the initiative to settle the issue through discussions with those opposing the extension.

The MRUA would launch agitation if the Railway backtracked from its Budget announcement, he added.
