Due to climate change and its deleterious effects felt all over the world, the necessity for protection of forests from timber mafias is considered of prime importance. At present there are a large number of vacancies in the field level posts in the Forest and Environment Department. These posts need to be filled up immediately as the incumbents are required to be present at the spot to guard the forests from mafias. Further they should be provided with latest communication network and necessary specialised training as to how to take strategic position to catch the mafias. It is now noticed that the staff of Forest Department are frequently attacked by Maoists and it is necessary that they should also be provided with sophisticated arms to defend themselves. K. C. Mohanti Bhubaneswar Withdraw permission to U.S. airlinesThe recent frisking of former President of India, A.P.J. Adbul Kalam by American Continental Airlines has hurt Indians. Dr. Kalam is not only our former President but also his contribution towards development of scientific temper of the nation has widely recognised. His admirers do not confine to India only, but he commands respects from scientific community world over. A simple letter of apology to Dr. Kalam by the airlines would not heal the wounds. Earlier former Defence Minister George Fernandes had undergone similar humiliation. The fresh insult centering Dr. Kalam warrants a stern action against the American Airline. Time and again Americans are making an impression that they are strong a strong nation and they can bully anybody. It is high time that the Indian government should reflect its strong displeasure through action. The permission to Continental Airline to operate on Indian soil should be scrapped. S. R. Krishna Berhampur Act on metro caseThere have been three serious accidents on the Metro Railway site of Delhi NCR during past fortnight and even the chief of Delhi Metro Project E. Sreedharan had put forward his resignation taking moral responsibility of the whole case. But as he is known for his highest degree of honesty for which his resignation was not accepted and an investigation was ordered. A few days back that report came to public domain where it is clearly putting the cause as inferior quality materials were used by a given company. If we remember then it is the same company that had been a major player in expansion work of National Highway 5 passing through Orissa. Some parts are yet to be completed like the bypass and one-way passage near Chilika area where few bridges are yet to be made operational. When Satyam fraud was disclosed, Maytas, its sister concern, was shown door in all the projects without spoiling a single second. However, even though metro case is now more than 15 day-old, the National Highway Development Authority is yet to respond. The company, responsible for inferior work in New Delhi, should not be allowed to operate further and which could put the fate of thousands of people who travel on the NH-5 across the State into jeopardy every day.
