VIJAYAWADA: Dental Council of India (DCI) president Anil Kohli on Sunday said that he had appealed to the Chief Ministers of most States in the country not to consider permitting any more new dental colleges under private managements, though there was no objection to new colleges being allowed to come up under the State governments. Speaking to reporters here, Dr. Kohli asserted that checks and balances were required to maintain the quality of dental education and the DCI was well aware of the fact that there were both good and bad private dental colleges. He said the Council would have no hesitation to permit new colleges under the government management, considering the need for filling up the shortage of faculty. Dr. Kohli was here to attend as chief guest at the inaugural function of the IX National PG Convention of the Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists (IAOMP) organised under the title “Gnaananveshana” (the quest for knowledge). Addressing the meeting, Dr. Kohli pointed out that India had the largest number of dental colleges in the world, but there was a general notion that there was less research and documentation. Of the 960 dental colleges in the world, nearly 280 colleges were located in India. University Vice-Chancellor A.V. Krishnam Raju, convention chief patron L. Krishna Prasad and others were present.
