Probe into PDP links a farce, says BJP

Staff Reporter

CPI(M), Congress asked to sever ‘ties’ with PDP, NDF

In agitation mode: BJP State president P.K. Krishnadas briefing presspersons after a three-day State meet of the party at Thiruvalla on Sunday.

PATHANAMTHITTA: Bharatiya Janata Party State president P.K. Krishnadas said the three-day party State committee meet that came to a close at Thiruvalla on Sunday called upon the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress to sever their ‘ties’ with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Development Front (NDF) which were found to be having connections with terrorists.

Mr. Krishnadas, accompanied by the party leaders M.S. Kumar, A.G. Unnikrishnan and T.R. Ajithkumar, was addressing a press conference at Thiruvalla on Sunday.

Both the PDP and the NDF were functioning as agents of the Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, he said. The Congress and the CPI(M) should protect the interests of the nation first, instead of promoting their own political interests, he said.

The BJP leader said the ongoing investigation into the terrorist links of the PDP was nothing but a farce aimed at diverting public attention from the real issue. The people had doubts about the genuineness of the probe when the PDP continued to be an ally of the CPI(M) that handled the Home portfolio.

“It is known beyond doubt that persons attached to the PDP and the NDF were behind various blasts in different parts of the country. Even some terrorists killed in encounters with security forces in Kashmir were identified as PDP activists from Kerala and still the CPI(M) keeps the PDP and its leader Abdul Nasir Maudany its close ally,” Mr. Krishnadas said.

He called upon CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala to make public statements that their parties had severed ties with the PDP and the NDF. He said BJP would submit a memorandum to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy soon highlighting the demand.

He said the investigation into the terrorist links of the PDP and the NDF should be entrusted to a Central agency, instead of the State police. The BJP would stage a march to the Secretariat with this demand on August 25.

Free trade pact

Mr. Krishnadas said the proposed free trade agreement between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would bring about a disastrous effect on the Indian economy. He said the Bharatiya Karshaka Morcha would observe the Farmers Day on August 17 as Farmers Protection Day, in protest against the agreement.

He said the BJP would stage dharna in all Assembly segments in the State, protesting against the government’s “anti-people policies” in the education sector, on August 4. The Bharatiya Mahila Morcha would stage a dharna before the Secretariat on August 14 protesting against the “anti-poor” health policies, and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha would launch an anti-terrorist campaign across the State from August 9 to 15, Mr. Krishnadas said.

He said the BJP State committee meet decided to strengthen the party’s mass base by effectively taking up various issues facing the common people.
