BIRMINGHAM: Maha Singh won the long jump gold, though his performance turned out to be his poorest for the season, in the UK Jumps and Throws Festival at the Alexander Stadium here on Saturday. Maha Singh jumped 7.55 metres in the fifth round to edge Britain’s Andre Fernandez (7.54m). Leigh Smith (7.42m) finished third. Indians Shiv Shankar Yadav (7.20m) and Ankit Sharma (7.15m) were sixth and eighth. Maha Singh had four marks over 7.60m at home this season with a best of 7.94m in Chennai in May. Disappointing showIndians continued to disappoint in other events. National record holder Hari Sankar Roy, though he managed to show improvement from his last outing in the Birmingham Games, still could do no better than 2.14m in high jump to finish second. Benedict Starley (2.04m) and Jithin Thomas (2.00) ended up fourth and sixth. In men’s shot put, Satyendra Singh (17.61m) took the third place. Briton Carl Myerscough had a season best 20.19m for the gold. Saurabh Vij was fourth with 17.51m.
