SHOWCASING CULTURE: Colourful images depicting various themes adorn the perimeter of Anna Salai at Nanandam.

CHENNAI: Following an encouraging response from residents to wall paintings on a small stretch of Anna Salai at Nandanam, as part of its city beautification plan, the Chennai Corporation has proposed to extend the project to the other parts of the city.

The colourful paintings depict the State’s rich cultural heritage.

Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said soon painting work would start on the perimeter of Directorate of Medical Services (DMS) complex at Teynampet and along a small stretch at Kamarajar Salai.

The civic body proposed to replicate the paintings in subways and flyovers, once the ban on wall posters and graffiti in subways and flyovers comes into effect on August 1.

Mr. Lakhoni said that having banned posters and graffiti on the entire stretch of Anna Salai, the civic body has taken up wall painting in a phased manner.

A senior Corporation official of the Saidapet zone said they had been receiving good response from the public. The perimeter of the golf course at Nandanam had given a wider canvas to showcase the rich heritage of the State.

The various images there included a painting of the golf sport, which was done on request. To add colour, the civic body has installed figurines showcasing the State’s martial and folk arts in eight places in the city, including Gemini Flyover, Sterling Road, Valluvar Kottam and near Connemara Library.

The wall paintings were done by J.P. Krishna and Company.
