Counters to function from 9.15 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.

CHENNAI: The move by the Income Tax Department to open special return receipt counters at various places in the city has turned out to be a hit. A couple of firms are urging the department to open such counters on their premises.

These special counters were opened at Chennai Airport on July 7, ICF (July 21 and 22) and Southern Railway Headquarters (July 23 and 24). At ICF, the department received returns from 10,000 salaried persons, 5,000 at Southern Railway Headquarters and 3,000 at Chennai Airport.

“The numbers could have been more if we had kept the counter open for one more day at the Chennai Airport. Besides, there were fence-sitters too and we expect them to make use of this facility from next year onwards. Chennai Port Trust authorities also requested us to open special counters, but we were not able to do so due to paucity of time,” P.P. Srivastava, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, told The Hindu.

With five working days left for filing returns, the IT Department will operate 41 special return receipt counters for salaried tax payers, 15 for non-salaried assesses, a counter each for bulk application and persons with disabilities/senior citizens at Aayakar Bhavan, Nungambakkam Road, from Monday to Friday.

The counters would function from 9.15 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. each day.

According to IT officials, a desk has been set up with nearly 10 officers to verify outstation PAN, UTISL PAN Facilitation counter, Axis Bank counter to receive payment of taxes and a separate desk of Tax Return Preparers.

The salaried tax-payers of Tambaram Income Tax and Kancheepuram Income Tax offices could also file their returns at special counters in Nungambakkam.

Tambaram and Kancheepuram offices would also continue to receive the returns.

Last year, the IT department received 3.26 lakh returns through the 60 special counters that took the total tally to 5.15 lakh for the entire year.
