Police form ‘village protection committees’ in naxal areas

KARIMNAGAR: In order to provide better policing and involve the rural youth in the policing, the Ramagundam circle police have formed Grama Rakshana committees (village protection committees) in the naxalite-affected villages.

First meeting

Accordingly, the first such village protection committee meeting was held in Anthargaon village of Ramagundam mandal on Sunday.

During this meeting, the police officials told the rural youth about their role for the maintenance of law and order in the villages and strive for the development of their villages.

Arms for youth

The police distributed lathies (batons), torch-lights, 12 rain-coats, whistles, two volleyball kits and one carom board to village protection committees.

The police thus constituted about 10 village protection committees by involving 115 village youth.

Naxal fold

Superintendent of Police M. Stephen Ravindra had conceived the idea of constituting village protection committees in the rural areas to desist the youth from get into the naxalite-fold and rather involve them in the policing itself.

The village protection committees would conduct patrolling of the village day and night in shifts to protect their village from dacoits and other “anti-social elements” like Maosists.

The police had also told the youth not to fall pray to the naxalites and lead a normal life in the society.

They assured all assistance for the youth by conducting job melas etc.

Godavarikhani DSP L.T. Chandrashekhar, Peddapalli DSP Venkat Swamy, Ramagundam CI Mohd. Tajuddin and SI R. Prakash and others were also present.
